Due to continuous rain, the water level of Kushiara river rose and the dam of the river broke and four unions of Jokiganj upazila of Sylhet were flooded. Water-logged people took shelter in shelters. On Saturday (July 6), BRAC distributed relief items to 230 families in the shelters of Jokiganj Government College and Jokiganj Hafsa Mahila College on the initiative of BRAC Jokiganj Manager Kamal Parvez, Kamrul Hasan and Branch Manager Belayet Hossain.
Appreciating the initiative of BRAC, Jokiganj Upazila Executive Officer Afsana Taslim thanked Jokiganj BRAC and invited everyone to participate in such a great work.
As the world’s largest non-governmental development organization, BRAC is always working as a cooperative organization alongside the government to deal with any disaster. Along with the Sylhet district headquarters, humanitarian assistance programs have been conducted by BRAC for the people affected by the sudden floods in the upazilas. Earlier on July 20, 205 packets of dry food were distributed to the flood victims in Hramarpar and Terortan slum areas of Sylhet city as part of the humanitarian assistance program. The relief items included chira 3 kg, mudri-1/2 kg, jaggery 1 kg, water 2 liters, biscuits 2 packets, saline 2 packets, soap mini 1, hygiene kit (Kishori). Provision of integrated emergency activities for life-saving interventions of affected people in Flood and Flash Flood funded by UNICEF for the period of 20 July to 19 October for emergency assistance and rehabilitation of BRAC flood victims.
Taking up a project called, initially the working area of the project will be Companyganj, Jaintapur, Kanighat, Goainghat. The project will work in the areas of Health and Nutrition, WASH, Education and Awareness (SBC).
BRAC’s Ripon Chandra Mandal, Rajeev Kumar Saha, Md. Mostafa Mojahed Uddin, Anik Ahmed Apu, Md. Suman Sarwar and Md. Noor Nabi were present during the relief distribution.
