On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, the operation of selling watermelons at fair prices through mobile truck sales and shops has started in 20 places in Dhaka.
Watermelon is being sold as a piece (instead of kilograms) in these places. Initially, the price of a piece of watermelon weighing 7 to 8 kg was fixed at Tk 300. The price of 4 to 6 kg of weight will be Tk 200.
The initiative has been taken by the Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA) and Fosal.com Limited.
The Director General of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate, AHM Shafiquzzaman, inaugurated this program at the TCB Bhaban premises in the capital’s Caravan Bazaar on Thursday.
The Consumer DG said, “Many private companies have given special discounts on the prices of products during Ramadan. They are working so that people do not suffer due to the price of daily commodities. If the government supports them, they will be able to provide products at affordable prices not only during Ramadan but throughout the year.”
Meanwhile, BPA president Suman Howladar said, “We are selling eggs and milk at a fair price during Ramadan. Meanwhile, traders are selling watermelons at unusual prices. That is why we have taken this initiative to give relief to the buyers.”
He said that watermelons will be supplied to 20 places in Dhaka in stages. Initially, it was decided to sell watermelons for between 200 and 300 taka, depending on their size.
