Borhanuddin to be climate migrant friendly city, hopes mayor

People who have lost their homes, land and livelihood due to climate change will get job opportunities and accommodation in Borhanuddin Municipality of Bhola. Borhanuddin municipality will be developed as the fourth climate migrant friendly city in the country through adaptation by exploiting industrialization-employment opportunities.
Speakers expressed this optimism at a project consultation meeting organized by development partners BRAC and Borhanruddin Municipality. The meeting was held in the hallroom of Borhanuddin Municipality of Bhola on Tuesday. Mayor of Borhanuddin Municipality Rafiqul Islam presided over the meeting.
Shahriar Muhammad Farhad, Project Coordinator of Climate Change and Urban Development Program of BRAC International delivered the welcome speech. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Raihan-Uzzaman OC Md. Shaheen Fakir spoke as special guest in the event.
Upazila Engineer Md. Maidul Islam Khan, former freedom fighter commander engineer Ahmadullah, upazila public health engineer Mahafuzur Rahman, journalist Md. Moniruzzaman, Mobashir Hasan Shipan, Municipal Secretary Pronay Kumar Saha, NGO Officer Babul Akhtar, BRAC International Project Manager Jewel Mahmud, Local Project Manager Zahid Hossain also spoke at the meeting.
Speakers said, through this project, city climate adaptation plan will be formulated with all stakeholders. Through which the country’s coastal Borhanuddin municipality will be developed as a migrant-friendly city, which will lead the way for other cities in adapting to the climate crisis.
It was informed in the meeting that this project named ‘Building Climate Resilient Migrant-Friendly Towns through Local Adaptation in Bangladesh’ will work to improve the livelihood, living environment and urban management of climate migrants, women, children, citizens with special needs in the city. People from different classes and professions gave suggestions and opinions in the meeting for the implementation of that work.
People from various professions including public representatives, businessmen, journalists and teachers were present in the meeting.
