The bodies of three children recovered, and one still missing after a speedboat capsized in the Dhanu River in Khaliajuri upazila of Netrokona on Saturday morning.
Three children were found about 700 meters away.
The deceased children are Ushamani (5), daughter of Mofail Miah in Andhair village, Laila Akhter (7), daughter of Swapan Mia, and Samia (11), daughter of Shamsu Mia. Shirin Akhter (18), daughter of Nawab Miah , is missing.
The incident took place at Panchhat Charpara in Gazipur Union of Khaliajuri Upazila.
The groom and his party were supposed to go to the bride’s house in Mriga village on a speedboat rented from Itna Upazila of Kishoreganj for the wedding of Rana Miah , son of Nawab Mia of Andhair village.
Just before departure, the 12 children and women on the boat were roaming around the haor for a while when the speedboat collided with a bulkhead coming from the opposite direction in the Dhanu River.
The collision tore the fishermen’s nets and led to a scuffle with the boat driver. At that time, the speedboat capsized. Four people on the boat are missing and three are injured.
The rest of them swam to safety. Acting UNO of Khaliajuri upazila, M.A Quader said that fire service personnel started rescue operations after the accident. Mymensingh’s diving team has also been conducting rescue operations since Friday. The rescue operations are being complicated due to the depth of the river and strong current.
