Clashes, chases, and violence erupt among BNP leaders and activists across the country over nomination disputes ahead of the upcoming national election.
In Meherpur-2 (Gangni) constituency, at least 12 people were injured in a clash between two factions after district BNP President Jabed Masud Milton was denied the party nomination.
The incident took place around 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Gangni Bazar.
On Monday, the BNP announced Amzad Hossain as its party candidate for the constituency. Following the announcement, supporters of district BNP President Jabed Masud Milton, angered by the decision, blocked the road and staged a protest by burning tires.
The demonstrators alleged that Jabed Masud Milton had kept the organization active for 17 years in the field, standing by leaders and activists through cases, attacks, and various adversities. They claimed that despite his dedication, the party suddenly nominated someone who had been inactive on the ground. They demanded that the nomination decision be reversed.
BNP’s nominated candidate for Meherpur-2 and former MP Amzad Hossain alleged that supporters of the deprived leader, district BNP President Jabed Masud Milton—led by Gangni Upazila BNP General Secretary Abdul Awal and his cadre group—attacked the upazila BNP office with locally made weapons, vandalizing the premises.
He claimed that at least 12 BNP leaders and activists were injured in the attack.
Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bani Israil said that both sides engaged in chase and counter-chase, creating a tense situation in Gangni. However, the police are working to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, in Chandpur-4 (Faridganj) constituency, supporters of BNP leader M.A. Hannan blocked the road in protest after he was denied nomination.
From Tuesday morning till noon, his supporters occupied the Faridganj–Raipur road near the upazila bus stand, obstructing traffic.
Police later arrived at the scene and tried to calm the situation.
Since the morning, leaders and activists of Faridganj municipal BNP and its affiliated organizations had gathered at the bus stand area, where they burned tires to block the road.
During the protest, they also vandalized and set fire to billboards of nominated candidate Lion Md. Harunur Rashid, causing a severe traffic jam in the area.
Elsewhere, in Magura-2 constituency, supporters of Dhaka South Jubo Dal’s (BNP Youth Wing) Member Secretary Rabiul Islam Nayon protested on Monday night after he was denied nomination.
Supporters from four unions of Mohammadpur, Shalikha, and Sadar upazilas in Magura demonstrated, branding nominated candidate Nitai Roy Chowdhury as “ineligible” and demanding that he be replaced by Rabiul Islam Nayon without delay.
