The BNP puzzled to fix its nomination in Faridpur-1 constituency while the current main foe Jamaat-e-Islami’s candidate is conducting campaign in blank field.
The constituency is consisting of Modhukhali, Boalmari and Alfadanga upazilas.
The Parliamentary seat is moderately stronghold for the BNP as its arch rival Awami League’s activities are remaining banned.
As the BNP yet to finalise its candidate in the constituency, the Jamaat’s contender Professor Elias Mollah is trying hard to win people’s hearts.
In the constituency, Khandaker Nasirul Islam, vice-president of the central committee of the Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal and former MP and former Joint-Secretary of Boalmari upazila BNP and ex-VP of Boalmari College Shamsuddin Mia Jhunu are vying for BNP’s nomination.
The faction of Jhunu Mia and Khandaker Nasir are frequently engaging infighting in the areas over the nomination contending.
Arson attacks, vandalisms in shops, installations and vehicles and blocking roads in different areas were occurred during their infighting in last several months due to nomination feud.
Both the factions blamed each other of getting supports from fallen AL leaders and terrors to empowering themselves.
Numbers of cases were filed against several hundred workers of the both side over attacking each other in those conflicts.
Meanwhile, having received the green signal from Jamaat, Prof. Dr. Md. Elias Molla, a retired professor at Jahangirnagar University, is working actively in the constituency for past several months.
Leaders and activists of Jamaat are attending markets, mosques, madrasas, and prayer gatherings, doa mahfils, delivering speeches highlighting various aspects of the Islamic system of governance and seeking support from local residents for their candidate Professor Elias Molla.
When contacted, BNP Organising Secretary Shama Obaed on Tuesday told The New Nation that the party is discussing and scrutinising the potential candidate for Faridpur-1 constituency.
“It is must to obey the party’s final decision for every vying aspirant. If they love the party, its founder Ziaur Rahman and its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, they have no alternative to follow the party decision,” Shama Obaed said.
According to the information, there are 477,981 voters in this constituency.
In addition, Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar, a former BNP leader, former MP, and freedom fighter, has joined the BNM party, but he has not yet been seen active in the electoral activities.
