BNP senior leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Saturday reiterated the party’s demand for a swift restoration of democracy in Bangladesh through a credible and fair election, stating it as essential for the nation’s advancement.
Speaking to reporters at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman on the 18th founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Baul Dal, Dr Moyeen said, “Democracy must be restored urgently, and the only path is through a fair election.”
He emphasized that no country can progress or uphold its dignity in the global arena without a democratic system. “Bangladesh was created through a movement for democracy, which could not survive under the framework of Pakistan,” he said.
Dr Moyeen criticized the Awami League, accusing it of undermining the democratic values that inspired the Liberation War. He alleged that the post-independence establishment of one-party Baksal rule and the introduction of an “unwritten Baksal system” betrayed the nation’s founding principles.
Referring to the events of August 5, 2024, he claimed that widespread public dissatisfaction forced the current regime to step down. “BNP believes in the spirit of independence and in democracy. Our founder, Ziaur Rahman, gave his life for these ideals,” he stated.
Highlighting the BNP’s continued struggle for democratic restoration, he added that real leadership earns love, not fear. “One-party rulers may display strength, but they fail to win people’s hearts. BNP stands for freedom, not revenge.”
Dr Moyeen also raised concerns over the lack of press freedom, stating, “Over the last 15 years, the media has not enjoyed true freedom. We want freedom of speech and media for all.”
He concluded by reaffirming BNP’s commitment to restoring democratic values and ensuring rights and liberties for every citizen.
