Staff Reporter :

The BNP will once again take to the streets if the interests of both its members and the people are threatened, said the partys Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Saturday.

“At present, we are not demonstrating on the streets. Instead, we are reaching out to people by distributing iftar items and Eid gifts, standing by them in both their happiness and hardships. However, if any obstacles arise against the interests of the party and the people, we will once again take to the streets,” he said while handing out Eid gifts to the underprivileged in the Beraid area of Badda.

The initiative, organised by the BNP’s Dhaka North City unit, was held on behalf of the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Fakhrul urged the people to prepare for a movement, alleging that both internal and external forces are conspiring to deprive them of their voting rights and delay the elections. “We will not let that happen,” he asserted.

He highlighted that, for the past 15 years, BNP leaders and activists have endured severe repression in their struggle to restore people’s right to vote.

The BNP leader also pointed out that the country was freed from former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s “tyrannical and fascist” rule on August 5, following a 36-day uprising in July, backed by the united efforts of political parties and students.

He further said that an interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, was formed with the primary responsibility of ensuring a fair national election within a short period.

“But whenever we bring up the topic of elections, many claim that the BNP focuses solely on this issue. It is only natural for us to do so, as our struggles have always been centered around this very cause,” he said.
