The main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has criticised the Awami League government for its handling of public university teachers’ issues.

He accused the government of pushing teachers towards hunger through the “unrealistic Prattoy pension scheme” and expressed BNP’s support for the teachers’ agitation against the scheme.

The leader aslo stated that the police have abducted two of its members from separate locations without formal arrest procedures and holding them in undisclosed locations.

The party has called on the police to return the individuals to their families.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the accusations during a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Wednesday.

Rizvi alleged that on Tuesday morning at 2:30 am, Marzooq Ahmed Al-Amin, the former Joint Secretary of Chhatra Dal Central Parliament, was taken away by law enforcement officers in plain clothes.
As of now, there has been no trace of Al-Amin, and Rizvi demanded his immediate public appearance and return to his family.

Rizvi also revealed that on June 30, 2024, at 12:00 pm, a team of law enforcement officers led by Detective Branch Sub-Inspector (SI) Kabir Hossain took Md. Kamruzzaman, Senior Joint Convener of Kaliganj Upazila Krishakdal under Satkhira District, from his home in Ratanpur.

The BNP has condemned these actions and urged the authorities to reveal the whereabouts of the two individuals and ensure their safe return.

“So far, no trace of him has been found. I strongly demand the immediate handover of Krishak Dal leader Kamruzzaman to his family,” Rizvi said.

He also revealed that on June 30, 2024, at 12:00 pm, a group of law enforcement officers led by Detective Branch Sub-Inspector (SI) Kabir Hossain abducted Md. Kamruzzaman, Senior Joint Convener of Kaliganj Upazila Krishakdal under Satkhira District, from his home in Ratanpur.

Rizvi also lambasted the government’s approach to corruption, calling it “nothing but a national joke.” He questioned how notorious figures such as Police Chief Benazir Ahmed, DMP Chief Asaduzzaman Mia, and National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman have maintained their high positions as close associates of the government.

“The so-called independent Anti-Corruption Commission is spineless and serves as a tool for the Awami League government to oppress opposition parties,” Rizvi said. He suggested that the government is failing to expose corruption due to internal conflicts over the sharing of ill-gotten money.

Rizvi alleged that the ACC has kept under wraps the irregularities and widespread corruption of the government over the past 15–16 years.

“The corrupt individuals and former government high officials bought luxurious houses, numerous flats, and hundreds of acres of land as achievements of their role in suppressing the movement,” the BNP leader alleged.
