BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for the immediate trial of those responsible for the killings during last year’s mass uprising, alongside urgent reforms to restore democratic governance in the country.

“We want swift justice for the killings that occurred during the uprising. At the same time, essential reforms must be implemented without delay,” Fakhrul said at a ‘Commemoration and Dialogue’ event marking the anniversary of the July 2024 movement.

Fakhrul stressed the need for a government with a true public mandate. “There’s a vast difference between governing with the people’s consent and ruling without it,” he said.

He expressed confidence in Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, stating, “We hope Prof Yunus will keep his promise to the people — to ensure a free, fair, and broadly acceptable election that paves the way for a truly representative government and parliament.”

The BNP leader also highlighted the damage done to democratic institutions during what he termed the “Awami fascist regime,” stressing the urgent need for institutional rebuilding.

“Many of the problems we face stem from the systematic weakening of our institutions. Rebuilding them won’t be easy — it will take time and patience,” Fakhrul added.
