BNP senior leader Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday called on the interim government to swiftly present an election roadmap, emphasizing that it would be unwise for the current administration to remain in power indefinitely under the pretext of state reforms.
“The interim government pledged to create an anti-discriminatory state, but prolonging its tenure under the guise of reforms is not appropriate,” he said during a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
The National People’s Party (NPP) organized the event titled “There is no alternative to elections to protect independence, sovereignty, and establish sustainable democracy.”
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, stressed that the interim government should focus on reforming the electoral system. “People have expectations from this government, and it has a responsibility to deliver state reforms,” he noted.
“These reforms need to be expedited. No single administration can implement all reforms at once, so the process should begin now, with the next elected government continuing the efforts,” he added.
Highlighting the people’s eagerness to exercise their voting rights, Mosharraf remarked that Bangladeshis have been deprived of this opportunity for the past 17 years.
He criticized certain vested interests for instigating unrest over minor issues, suggesting such actions are part of a larger conspiracy against the government.
The BNP leader warned that instability and conspiracies would intensify if the government clung to power in the name of reforms.
“An electoral roadmap is crucial to orient the people towards elections. Only then efforts to create instability can be countered,” he asserted.
BNP Youth Wings will organise protest march to Indian high commission: The BNP’s three affiliated wings-Jubo Dal, Swecchasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal-have announced a protest march towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Sunday, condemning the recent attack on Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala.
The march, scheduled to start at 10 a.m. from the BNP Central Office in Naya Paltan, will include the submission of a memorandum to the Indian Embassy.
Chhatra Dal Office Secretary Jahangir Alam confirmed the program in a press release on Saturday, urging all members to participate in the programme on time.
The protest comes in response to the December 2 incident in which members of the Hindu Sangarsha Samiti vandalized the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, desecrated the premises, and set the Bangladesh national flag ablaze. The attack was linked to the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the Sommilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote.
Videos from the scene showed protesters tearing down and burning the flag, prompting strong resentment from Dhaka over the violent attack and disrespect to the national emblem.
