BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday announced that the party is prepared to sign the July Charter at any time, reiterating its support for the ongoing democratic reform process.
Speaking at a press conference at his Gulshan residence, Salahuddin said the BNP had responded with proposed amendments to the July Charter on July 30, shortly after receiving the document.
“The July Declaration holds both historical and political importance,” he said. “We had already responded to its initial proposals in February. However, we opposed the manner in which March 26 was intended to be portrayed and demanded recognition through the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution.”
Salahuddin emphasized that the BNP has cooperated fully with the Charter process and expressed its intent to continue engaging constructively. He also noted that the party will deliver its formal reaction if its proposed amendments are not reflected when the final version of the Charter is read out.
In response to skepticism about BNP’s sincerity, Salahuddin dismissed the doubts, saying, “We are committed to the anti-fascist struggle and urge all to remain united.”
He added that the BNP participated in discussions on 19 key issues under the Consensus and Reform Commission, agreeing on 12 and recording notes of dissent on 7.
Salahuddin concluded by noting that the BNP has not yet received an official invitation to the July Declaration ceremony scheduled to be held at Manik Mia Avenue.
