The BNP on Wednesday warned of attempts to divide the nation and urged Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to promote national unity to address the underlying causes of recent unrest.
During an evening meeting at the state guest house Jamuna, a five-member BNP delegation, led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, conveyed their concerns about the deteriorating law-and-order situation.
They highlighted recent incidents, including unrest involving ISKCON and student protests, and called for immediate steps to ease public suffering.
“The purpose of our meeting was to share the BNP’s concerns with the Chief Adviser regarding recent developments and to urge him to foster unity to prevent further division,” Fakhrul told reporters after the meeting. He expressed hope that Dr. Yunus and his Advisory Council would find a swift resolution to these challenges.
Other members of the delegation included Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed.
Mirza Fakhrul also called on the Chief Adviser to quash politically motivated cases filed against BNP leaders during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure and to cancel the current Union Parishad polls, citing widespread irregularities.
Earlier that day, Fakhrul voiced concerns over attempts by certain individuals to incite division through social media, warning of efforts to push the nation “into darkness.” He lamented the attacks on media outlets such as Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, despite the BNP’s long-standing struggle for press freedom.
“It is regrettable that those who claim to be patriotic are fostering disunity instead,” Fakhrul said, questioning whether such individuals were truly friends or enemies of Bangladesh.
His remarks came at an event organised by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) at the Jatiya Press Club to commemorate the 34th martyrdom anniversary of Dr. Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, who was killed during the 1990 anti-autocratic movement.
