A four-member delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) met with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Saturday evening at his official residence, Jamuna, as part of an effort to ease the country’s growing political tension.

The BNP team, led by Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, included Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed. The meeting began at 7:35 PM and focused on the prevailing political crisis, the upcoming general election, and a potential roadmap for restoring democratic governance.

Earlier in the day, BNP leader Amir Khosru told reporters that a credible and timely national election is essential to ending the political deadlock. “There is no alternative to a fair election if we are to return to democratic norms,” he said, stressing the urgency of addressing the situation, even without a formal agenda.

Responding to questions about the Chief Adviser’s reported intention to resign, Khosru dismissed suggestions of a political crisis, instead calling for an accountable government formed through transparent elections. “The people have sacrificed much over the past 16 years. They now want democracy restored through their vote,” he added.

BNP’s Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, speaking at a separate event, echoed the call for democratic transition, describing it as the only solution for Bangladesh. He referred to August 5 as a pivotal moment symbolising the end of “15 years of tyranny” and the beginning of a new democratic chapter.

Meanwhile, speculation continues over Chief Adviser Yunus’s possible resignation, following recent political pressures and remarks by the Army Chief that have stirred public debate.
