UNB, Dhaka: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sent to jail again after he surrendered before a court here on Tuesday in three arson cases. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Maruf Hossain passed the order rejecting his bail prayers in the cases filed with the Paltan Police Station. The court, however, asked the jail authorities to ensure Fakhrul’s medical treatment as his lawyers said he has been suffering from various diseases. Earlier, on Monday, turning down the plea filed by Mirza Fakhrul seeking extension of the deadline for his surrender in three cases for street violence, the Supreme Court asked him to surrender to the lower court. Following the apex court directives, M Sanaullah Miah filed a bail petition with the court on the behalf of Fakhrul. Complying with the SC order, the BNP acting secretary general surrendered before the lower court around 2:30pm. On January 4, assistant sub-inspector of Paltan Police station filed a case against 28 BNP leaders and activists, including Mirza Fakhul for allegedly torching a bus of ‘Tanjil Paribahan’ in front of Bangabandhu Hawkers’ Market on the day. On January 5, SI Mujibur Rahman of the same police station filed a case against 50 people, including Mirza Fakhrul and Rafiqul Islam Miah, for torching a motorcycle of traffic sergeant in the city’s culvert road area. On January 6, a BRTC bus driver, Miltan Ali Bishwas filed a case against Fakhrul among 34 people with the police station for torching his vehicle in front of Rajuk building on the day. Earlier on July 13, the Appellate Division upheld the High Court bail for six weeks to the BNP acting secretary general in the three cases on health grounds. The court also asked Fakhrul to surrender before the trial court before expiry of the bail. On October 6, the SC extended until November 2 its order asking the BNP acting secretary general to surrender before the lower court in three cases. Meanwhile, the BNP leader filed a petition before the SC seeking further extension of his bail by eight weeks on October 28, but the court asked him to surrender before the lower court. Earlier, arrested on January 6 by plainclothes police in front of Jatiya Press Club, the BNP leader had been released from jail on bail on July 14 on health grounds. After being released from jail six months after his arrest, the BNP acting secretary general received medical treatment in Singapore and the US for nearly two months. He again went to Singapore on October 17 for three days for treatment as he has long bee suffering from various health complexities, including blockage in the nerve of neck.
