BNP-JCD clash over extortion in Sunamganj

A violent clash between two factions of the BNP and Chhatra Dal over alleged extortion activities in Madhyanagar upazila of Sunamganj resulted in the death of a pedestrian and several others being injured on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Ali, the son of late Hossain Ali Talukdar from Hossainpur village in the upazila. According to police and local sources, the incident stemmed from a dispute over extortion money being collected from lorries passing through Mahishkhola Bazar, a busy area near Tahirpur upazila.

Moktar Hossain, a member of the upazila unit BNP convening committee, was reportedly leading a group that had been extorting money from passing vehicles. Trouble began when Harun Mia, the general secretary of Bangshikunda Uttar union unit of Chhatra Dal, attempted to take control of the extortion operation.

The situation escalated on Monday afternoon, when a heated argument between the two groups eventually turned into a violent clash, resulting in several injuries. The injured victims were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where Mohammad Ali was declared dead upon arrival. The others were treated for their injuries.

Madhyanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md Sajeeb Rahman, confirmed that the body of the deceased has been sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities are working to determine further details regarding the clash and the individuals involved.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing tensions over extortion activities in the region, with police and local authorities stepping up efforts to address such issues.
