NN Online:

The two major political parties in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, are making efforts to reduce their differences and maintain a united front as the country prepares for the 13th parliamentary elections. Despite differing statements from the leaders of both parties after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s downfall, there has been a noticeable shift in tone and approach recently. Both parties are focused on maintaining political unity in the face of ongoing tensions surrounding the upcoming elections, preferring to avoid conflict with each other during this critical period.

During a meeting of BNP’s highest policymaking forum, the Standing Committee, on November 11, party leaders discussed the importance of maintaining normal relations with Jamaat. Leaders emphasized the need to avoid unnecessary discord, particularly in light of the upcoming elections. On the same evening, Jamaat’s Amir, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, speaking at an event in East London, urged the need for unity, calling for the cessation of petty disputes to ensure solidarity.

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a senior member of BNP’s Standing Committee, clarified the party’s stance on Jamaat, stating, “Why would there be a conflict with Jamaat? Like any other political party, Jamaat is a legitimate political entity. We, too, are engaging in politics based on our principles and goals. There is no reason to create unnecessary disputes.” He further stressed the importance of allowing time for reform and a logical transition toward an interim government to address fundamental political issues.

Meanwhile, Jamaat’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Parwar, stated that there were no significant disagreements between the BNP and Jamaat, reaffirming the cordial relationship between the two parties. “We have harmonious relations with BNP and other political parties. Any reports suggesting otherwise are misinterpretations,” he said. He further added, “We need unity now more than ever. For the sake of unity, let us set aside minor differences. When our hearts unite, Allah will bless us with success.”

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Amir of Jamaat, also addressed the need for self-correction within the party. “If you find any mistakes within Jamaat, kindly point them out so we can correct them,” he said. “By doing so with kindness and understanding, we will make our journey easier in the path of righteousness.”

There have been some concerns regarding potential disagreements between BNP and Jamaat over the political restructuring that has followed recent shifts in power. Analysts have noted a growing uncertainty about whether BNP views Jamaat as a political rival. In response, several BNP leaders have emphasized the importance of keeping communication channels open with Jamaat to avoid any rift. They have also called for sustained dialogue, both formal and informal, on matters of national unity.

As the election season approaches, it is clear that both BNP and Jamaat are working to maintain their alliance and avoid any internal divisions that might undermine their collective strength in the upcoming political battles.
