The BNP on Thursday warned that it may be forced to withdraw its cooperation with the interim government unless a clear roadmap for holding the next general election by December 2025 is announced without delay.

Speaking at a press conference, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain called for the immediate removal of certain “controversial advisors,” including those allegedly linked to a newly formed political party and the National Security Adviser, in order to uphold neutrality and the government’s credibility.

“The nation’s highest priority is the restoration of democratic, constitutional, and voting rights through the establishment of an elected political government that reflects the aspirations of the people—especially in light of the student-led July mass uprising,” said Mosharraf.

He demanded the announcement of a “specific and immediate roadmap” to ensure the formation of a new national parliament through a free, fair, and impartial election by December this year.

Mosharraf emphasized that ensuring a credible election must be the interim government’s central agenda. “Otherwise, as a party of the people, it will be difficult for BNP to continue its cooperation with this administration,” he warned.

The BNP leader also criticized the presence of politically affiliated individuals within the advisory council, saying it undermines the government’s image and public trust.

“Some advisors are either directly or indirectly involved with a newly formed political party. Their continued presence raises serious doubts about the government’s neutrality. Removing them is essential to preserve its credibility,” he said.

He particularly pointed to recent remarks made by National Security Adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique concerning BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, calling the comments controversial and demanding his removal as well.

“This is not the first time we have demanded the removal of certain advisors whom we consider enablers of fascism,” he added.

Highlighting the government’s core responsibility to facilitate the next parliamentary election, Mosharraf recommended forming a lean advisory council to focus on routine administrative tasks, instead of maintaining a large team with political overtones.

He concluded by cautioning that if the interim government continues to ignore the BNP’s proposals and concerns—as it has in the past—the party will be compelled to reconsider its current stance and cooperation.

The press conference was held at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, with Standing Committee members Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed also in attendance.
