BNP on Friday announced that it will hold countrywide demonstrations on Saturday, pressing for the swift arrest of those responsible for the gun attack on independent Dhaka-8 candidate Osman Hadi.
The announcement came from BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at an event titled “Plan to Build the Country” held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman firmly denounced the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi.
“I strongly condemn this barbaric attack on Sharif Osman Hadi,” he said while speaking as chief guest at a discussion at the Krishibid Institute in the capital’s Farmgate area.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also deplored the incident, saying such violence in the heart of Dhaka is beyond comprehension.
“As the entire nation prepares for the election, an incident of this nature at the centre of the capital is utterly unacceptable.
I pray for his speedy recovery,” he wrote in a Facebook statement on Friday.
During the KIB programme, Rizvi described the attack as a premeditated
scheme. “Osman Hadi was shot by miscreants as part of a planned conspiracy. We demand a thorough investigation and the prompt arrest of those involved,” he said.
He added that BNP and its affiliated organisations would stage demonstrations in Dhaka and nationwide on Saturday to press their demands.
BNP also expressed grave concern over the shooting.
In a statement on Friday, Rizvi said the attack is part of a “dangerous and calculated design.”
“There is no doubt this is a move to undermine the election atmosphere through orchestrated acts of terror.
A vested quarter is attempting to exploit the situation, trying to stir chaos and instil fear to serve its interests.
Politically motivated violent groups are active across the country,” the statement read.
He condemned the attack in strong terms and called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
Rizvi also wished the critically injured Sharif Osman Hadi a speedy recovery.
