BNP calls for quick poll arrangement

BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Monday urged the interim government to arrange a credible national election swiftly, facilitating a peaceful and dignified transfer of power to elected public representatives.
Speaking at a discussion, Mosharraf warned the interim government, recalling that past regimes, including those of HM Ershad and Sheikh Hasina, were through uprisings when citizens’ voting rights were denied.
“The tenure of the interim government cannot be indefinite. Eventually, they must relinquish power. To leave with peace and dignity, they must hand over authority to the elected representatives of the people,” Mosharraf stated.
He made these remarks during a program organized by the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) titled “Shaheed Zia, Multi-Party Democracy, and the Current Political Context,” held at the Dr. Milon Auditorium of Dhaka Medical College. The event was arranged to commemorate the 89th birth anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
Mosharraf reiterated that the BNP has supported the interim government since its formation, urging it to hold elections promptly after completing necessary reforms.
“If the government takes these steps, it will enable the country’s citizens to support the future government in peace and comfort, facilitating national progress,” he added.
While acknowledging the government’s focus on reforms, he emphasised that reforms should not be constrained by a rigid timeline, as they are an ongoing process.
The BNP leader noted that his party had already submitted reform proposals in response to the government’s initiative. “The government should now finalize the proposals through discussions with all parties and take the necessary steps to implement them,” he added.
Mosharraf emphasized that any reforms the current administration cannot complete should be left for the next government to address. “Therefore, if the current government wishes to step down peacefully and with dignity, it must conduct the election promptly, complete the necessary reforms, and transfer power to the representatives of the people,” he said.
