Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday reiterated the party’s firm stance on participating in elections, emphasizing that the BNP is fully prepared to contest polls at any time.

Speaking at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Fakhrul said, “BNP is always ready for elections. BNP wants to come to power through elections. Even if the election is held tomorrow, we are ready to join it.”

The BNP leader stressed that the party is committed to democratic principles and electoral politics, distancing itself from any revolutionary or extra-constitutional approach. “BNP is not a revolutionary party. We want to come to power through election getting people’s mandates,” he added.

Addressing the timing of the next general election, Fakhrul said that December would be the most suitable month, citing potential disruptions in April due to Ramadan, the national academic examinations, and the monsoon season.

“April is not suitable for election as Ramadan, two public examinations, and monsoon will coincide with the election process,” he said.

He further pointed out that historically, most general elections in Bangladesh have taken place between November and January, with only two exceptions—both of which, he claimed, were marred by complications.

Fakhrul’s remarks come amid growing political discussions over the timing and preparation for the upcoming national election.
