BNP activist killed in Jashore

Staff Reporter :

A local activist of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was hacked to death allegedly by Awami League members over a longstanding feud at Sharsha upazila in Jashore district.

The incident took place on Tuesday night at Durgapur village under Lakshmanpur Union of the upazila.

The victim has been identified as Md Liton, son of Azgor Ali from that area.
According to locals, Liton was a known BNP supporter and had long-standing political and personal disputes with several local Awami League activists.

Abul Hasan Zahir, president of Sharsha upazila BNP unit, confirmed that Liton was an active BNP member. “He had been in conflict with Awami League men in the village for some time. Last night, while resting on a pushcart at Durgapur village market, he was attacked and brutally hacked by a group of assailants believed to be from Awami League,” Zahir alleged. His family rushed him to hospital where doctors declared him dead.

This incident comes just two days after another BNP supporter, Abdul Hai, was killed in a reported cocktail attack at Dubpara village under Bahadurpur Union of the same upazila.

Sharsha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Robiul Islam confirmed the incident saying that police visited the scene immediately after receiving the report. “To prevent further unrest, law enforcement has been deployed in the area. Preliminary investigations suggest the murder stemmed from an old rivalry possibly linked to drug trade issues,” the OC said.

He added that individuals named Selim, Momin, and Ramzan-identified as Awami League supporters-were allegedly involved in the killing. Further investigation is underway.
