Bangladesh has launched its first robotic rehabilitation centre at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Dhaka, marking a major milestone in the country’s healthcare sector.

The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated on Sunday by Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum.
Established with financial and technical assistance from the Chinese government, the centre introduces advanced robotic technology for patient recovery and rehabilitation.

Speaking at the event, Adviser Nurjahan described the initiative as a groundbreaking step for modern healthcare.

“The Chinese government extended support upon our request. Now the challenge is to make this centre sustainable,” she said, urging BMU authorities to expand such services to other districts across the country.

The centre began limited operations on July 10 as part of a pilot phase. With equipment valued at nearly Tk 20 crore provided by China, the facility houses 62 robotic systems-22 of them powered by artificial intelligence.

These machines will deliver precise physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, and long-term treatment tailored to individual patients.

To ensure smooth operations, seven Chinese biomedical engineers trained 27 Bangladeshi doctors and physiotherapists in handling the technology.

Once the staff gain further experience and final preparations are complete, the centre will move to full-scale operation.

Patients suffering from stroke, paralysis, neurological disorders, nerve injuries, frozen shoulder, accident-related complications, or chronic pain will benefit from the centre’s cutting-edge services.

Authorities have also confirmed that individuals injured during the July movement and still facing long-term complications will receive free robotic treatment.

BMU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shahinul Alam presided over the inauguration ceremony, describing the project as a landmark achievement in building modern and inclusive healthcare in Bangladesh.
