A meeting was held in front of the Bangladesh Biman office in Majumdari on Airport Road in the city on Sunday afternoon, January 5, at the initiative of NRB Society UK, in protest against the suspension of Biman flights on the Sylhet-Manchester route.
Sylhet District BNP General Secretary Emran Ahmed Chowdhury addressed the protest meeting as the chief guest, chaired by MD Jamal Uddin, Director of NRB Society UK, and jointly moderated by Shafiqul Islam and Shahin Alam.
Atikur Rahman Liton, Chairman of Alonkari Union Parishad, Kamalbazar UP Chairman Md. Ekramul Haque, former Chairman of Rampasha UP Md. Khasru Ahmed, spoke at the protest meeting organized in collaboration with Probas Bangla UK.
The speakers at the protest meeting said that the Sylhet-Manchester route is very important for the expatriate Bangladeshis living in the northern UK. It is not only their means of transportation but also one of the bridges of their economic and social connection with the country. The route for which a ticket worth 700 pounds has to be purchased for 1500 pounds. However, they are trying to close this profitable route. If flights on the Sylhet-Manchester route are stopped, thousands of expatriates in Sylhet will be in trouble. Therefore, flights on this route should not be stopped under any circumstances. The expatriates demand their lives, and the concerned authorities are urged to take effective steps to quickly resolve the problem and keep the route running.
It is worth noting that there is no official announcement from Bangladesh Biman. However, the ticketing system is closed from next May. As a result, in light of past experience, expatriates are assuming that Biman’s flights on the Sylhet-Manchester route will be closed from April onwards.
