Sylhet Bureau :
Surveillance has been increased at the Sylhet border due to the imposition of night curfew in three districts of India’s Meghalaya state bordering Sylhet. In this situation, the BGB has increased its activities at the border to stop illegal infiltration and smuggling into India.
On Saturday (May 10) morning, BGB (48th Battalion) Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Haque confirmed the matter.

He said that the government of that country has imposed a night curfew in three districts of India’s Meghalaya state bordering Sylhet. This is their internal matter. However, in this situation, the BGB has increased its surveillance so that no one tries to infiltrate into India and gets involved in smuggling. At the same time, the BGB is also working to make people in the border areas aware.

Earlier, on Thursday (May 8), the East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills district administrations of Meghalaya state, India, imposed this curfew. A copy of the order has been sent to the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet.
On Saturday (May 10) morning, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad confirmed the matter and said, “The Jaintia Hills district administration of India, bordering Gowainghat in Sylhet, has imposed a night curfew. This is their internal matter. The District Magistrate there informed about the matter through a copy.

It is to be noted that the order signed by East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate of Meghalaya state, India, Shri Shivansh Arasthira, states that the international border of East Jaintia Hills district is not yet completely fenced. Due to this, there is a risk of illegal infiltration in this area. Especially terrorist groups, smugglers and unwanted infiltrators can cross the border in the dark of night and engage in illegal activities. In this situation, there will be a night curfew from May 8 until further orders. This curfew will be in an area of 500 meters from the zero line of the international border. The curfew period is from 8 pm to 6 am every day.

The order further mentioned that since the border area is completely unfenced, it has become a risky entry point for smugglers, illegal infiltrators and members of banned terrorist groups. Consequently, this step has been taken in the interest of maintaining peace and order. The curfew order has come into effect immediately and will remain in force until further orders.
