A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) soldier was killed and four others injured after a lightning strike hit a patrol team at the Rowmari border in Kurigram around midnight on Wednesday, according to Bangla Tribune.

The deceased has been identified as Riyad Hossain, 32, a soldier from Dadevanga BOP under the Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion. He was the son of Abdul Latif from Atpara upazila in Netrokona district.

The injured include Sergeant Jasim (52), Soldier Nadim (28), Soldier Shaheen (28), and Ansar member Ferdous Hossain (36).

Sources from BGB and local authorities reported that the patrol team had taken shelter under a tin-roofed structure near International Main Pillar 1056 during a sudden thunderstorm when lightning struck, injuring six members.

All injured personnel were rushed to Rowmari Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared Riyad Hossain dead. Two of the severely injured were later referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while the rest continue treatment at Rowmari.

Sergeant Abdul Halim, the company commander at BGB’s Dadevanga camp, confirmed that some patrol members had been injured but declined to comment on the fatality.

Officer-in-Charge Lutfor Rahman of Rowmari Police Station said he visited the hospital following the incident and confirmed one fatality. “He died before reaching the hospital,” Rahman said.
