After the shooting of Inquilab Manch spokesperson and potential independent MP candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency Osman Hadi, the BGB has tightened security in all border areas of Sylhet region to prevent those involved from secretly leaving the country. Security was tightened in the border areas of Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts since Friday night.
Since Saturday morning, BGB members have been seen setting up check posts in different areas and searching vehicles and suspicious persons. However, no suspicious person has been reported to have been arrested till Saturday evening. The BGB said that security measures have been tightened at the border in some areas since Friday night to prevent illegal crossing. Check posts are being set up and searched at various points since Saturday morning.
The BGB also said that this special security measure will remain in place in all border areas of Sylhet division until the situation normalizes. In addition to border security, the BGB is on the highest alert to control the overall law and order situation in the country.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanzilur Rahman, commander of the BGB Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), said that since the incident, 16 BOPs under the 55 BGB have been conducting regular patrols as well as additional special patrols. At the same time, necessary special check posts have been set up there after identifying possible escape and illegal crossing points. In addition, search operations are being conducted on vehicles and suspicious persons in the border areas.
He said that the 55 BGB is responsible for protecting the border of about 103 kilometers in Habiganj district. In addition to ensuring border security, the BGB is in a strict position to prevent terrorists from escaping to the neighboring country and all kinds of illegal infiltration. Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB) Commander Lt. Col. Md. Nazmul Haque, who is in charge of most areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj, said that 4/5 mobile check posts have been set up in the border areas of Sylhet since noon. Apart from this, additional patrols have been deployed in the areas under the responsibility of each BOP and intelligence surveillance has been increased. However, no suspect has been arrested so far. He also said that it is not possible to say for how long such activities will continue. However, a decision will be taken later after assessing the situation.
