BGB operation at Sylhet border: 279 Indian cows and buffaloes seized

237 Indian cows and 42 buffaloes have been seized in a special operation conducted by the Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB). This is said to be the largest cattle seizure at the border in the history of the 48 BGB. The estimated value of the seized cows and buffaloes is about Tk 3 crore.
On Tuesday (October 7), an anti-smuggling operation was conducted at the Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet district and Lafarge border of Sunamganj on the basis of secret information overnight. The operation at the Gowainghat border was led by Major Nurul Huda,
Deputy Commander of Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB and Gowainghat Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk.
Commander of Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB, Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Haque, confirmed the information.
According to BGB sources, a special team of BGB led by Major Nurul Huda, Deputy Commander of Sylhet 48 BGB, seized 237 Indian small and large cows from Itachki village of Rustumpur union in Sylhet Gowainghat upazila. On the other hand, 42 Indian buffaloes were seized from the Lafarge border in Sunamganj under the 48 BGB.
The seized 237 Indian cows are estimated to be worth 2 crore taka and the buffalo is worth 1 crore taka. After receiving information that Indian cows were kept in Itachki village of Rustumpur union of the upazila after entering Bangladesh, the BGB conducted a night-long operation and was able to seize 237 Indian cows.
In this regard, Gowainghat Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Omar Farooq said that the task force’s operation has seized illegally brought Indian cows. The administration will continue this anti-smuggling operation in Gowainghat.
48 BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Haque told Kalbela that as per the instructions of the current government, the BGB’s operational activities and intelligence activities are continuing to maintain security at the border and prevent smuggling. 237 cows have been seized from Itachki in Gowainghat, Sylhet, and 42 Indian buffaloes from Lafarge in Sunamganj overnight. The estimated value of the cows and buffaloes is Tk 3 crore.
He also said that the next legal action of the seized cows and buffaloes is under process. The cows and buffaloes will be auctioned in the presence of customs representatives.
