A special operation conducted by the Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB) led to the seizure of 237 Indian cows and 42 buffaloes, marking the largest cattle seizure in the history of the 48 BGB. The estimated value of the seized animals is approximately Tk 3 crore.

On Tuesday based on overnight secret information, an anti-smuggling operation was carried out at Gowainghat Upazila in Sylhet and the Lafarge border in Sunamganj. The operation at the Gowainghat border was led by Major Nurul Huda, Deputy Commander of Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB, along with Gowainghat Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk.

Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Haque, Commander of Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB, confirmed the information. According to BGB sources, a special team seized 237 Indian cows from Itachki village of Rustumpur Union in Gowainghat Upazila, Sylhet, while 42 Indian buffaloes were seized from the Lafarge border in Sunamganj. The estimated value of the cows is Tk 2 crore, and the buffaloes Tk 1 crore.

The seizure followed information that Indian cows had been kept in Itachki village after entering Bangladesh. The BGB conducted a night-long operation and successfully confiscated the cattle.
Gowainghat Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Omar Farooq stated that the operation targeted illegally imported Indian cattle and confirmed that anti-smuggling operations will continue in the area.

Lt. Col. Md. Nazmul Haque told Kalbela that under government instructions, BGB operational and intelligence activities continue to maintain border security and prevent smuggling.
He added that legal proceedings regarding the seized cows and buffaloes are underway, and the animals will be auctioned in the presence of customs representatives
