The Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) have expressed strong concern over what they describe as false and misleading reporting by Indian mainstream media regarding minority issues in Bangladesh.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, December 4, BFUJ Acting President Obaidur Rahman Shaheen, General Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury, DUJ President Shahidul Islam, and General Secretary Khurshid Alam condemned such “yellow journalism.”
The journalist leaders criticised the Indian media for spreading fabricated and baseless reports, particularly concerning the recent arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spokesperson for the Sanatani Jagaran Jote.
They allege that these reports have fuelled extremist activities in India, including attacks on Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala and protests outside Bangladeshi diplomatic offices in Kolkata and Mumbai. Protesters reportedly tore down the Bangladeshi flag and staged aggressive demonstrations, escalating tensions.
The statement also linked the Indian media’s misinformation to increasing anti-Bangladesh rhetoric and extremist activities along the Assam border and across India. Such deliberate campaigns, the leaders emphasised, undermine Bangladesh’s sovereignty and harm bilateral relations.
BFUJ and DUJ urged the Indian media to adhere to journalistic ethics and avoid spreading propaganda that could exacerbate communal tensions and disrupt regional harmony. They called for responsible reporting to counter the spread of misinformation.
