BFIU freezes bank accounts of 11 including journos

Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial intelligence agency of the central bank, has ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to 11 individuals, including 10 journalists.

BFIU issued a directive on Sunday to banks instructing them to freeze the accounts of 11 individuals. The directive also includes suspending the bank accounts of businesses owned by these individuals.

The individuals whose accounts have been frozen are- Dainik Bangla Acting Editor Chowdhury Jafarullah Sharafat, former president of the National Press Club Shafiqur Rahman, Chief Editor of TV Today Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, former Press Minister in Washington Sajjad Hossain Sabuj, DBC News Assignment Editor Naznin Munni, Chief News Editor of Independent TV Ashish Ghosh Saikat, Gazi TV Editor (Research) Anjan Roy, Chattogram Bureau Chief of Somoy TV Kamal Dey, Chief Editor of Dainik Amar Somoy Abdul Gaffar Khan, former Narayanganj correspondent of Jugantor Raju Ahmed, and an official from EXIM Bank.

All transactions from the frozen personal and privately-owned business accounts of the individuals will remain suspended for the next 30 days.

The BFIU’s directive said the suspension of transactions would be governed by relevant provisions of the anti-money laundering regulations. The letter also included the names and national ID details of the individuals involved.
