Rangamati Correspondent :
Farida Akhtar, Advisor for Fisheries and Livestock, stated, “Our goal will be to explore how the Kaptai Lake Fisheries Development and Marketing Center of the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) particularly the landing station can be modernized through investment.
Once this center is developed, the fisheries development activities will not only benefit Rangamati but also contribute to the overall enhancement of the country’s fisheries resources.”
The advisor made these remarks on Sunday at a briefing with journalists after inspecting various facilities of the BFDC in Rangamati’s Kaptai Lake, including the fish landing ghats, fish landing station, ice plant, and other operations of the corporation.
Present at the briefing were Farah Shammi, Chairman (Additional Secretary) of the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, Commander Faiz Al Karim, Manager of BFDC Rangamati, and local fish traders.
The Advisor expressed concern that, despite the economic significance of fisheries resources in Bangladesh, this BFDC center is still in a dilapidated condition.
She added that the BFDC center in Rangamati has played a crucial role for many years in fish collection, preservation, and marketing.
Processed fish from this center is supplied to Dhaka and other parts of the country. However, despite these activities, the infrastructure of the institution has not received adequate attention.
Therefore, the government will continue to invest in modernizing the center.
Later in the afternoon, the Advisor visited the sanctuary adjacent to the Rangamati Deputy Commissioner’s bungalow and the sanctuary near the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) office.
During the visit, she inquired about the overall condition of the sanctuary, the breeding status of fish in the protected areas, and the participation of local fishermen.
