BAU Correspondent:
An interactive discussion focusing on educational development and drug abuse awareness was held at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on Friday (May 16), engaging students and faculty of the Faculty of Veterinary Science.
The event took place at 3 PM at the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium and was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Bahanur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science. The keynote speaker was Md. Zafrullah Kazal, Additional Director of the Department of Narcotics Control, Mymensingh Division. Also present were Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Alim, Proctor of the university; Professor Dr. Md. Musharraf Uddin Bhuiyan, Director of the Planning and Development Wing; faculty members, and nearly 350 students.
The program addressed both academic reform and the risks of drug addiction. Students raised several academic issues, including replacing practical notebooks with presentations, increasing internship allowances, reopening the faculty cafeteria, and renovating classrooms.
Md. Zafrullah Kazal presented a slideshow highlighting the causes, impacts, and solutions to drug abuse. “Most drug addicts begin with smoking,” he said. “Spending money on cigarettes could instead be used for healthier options. Drug abuse is not only destroying individuals but also harming families. Awareness is essential.”
In his closing remarks, Dean Dr. Bahanur Rahman urged students to use their time wisely and to prepare themselves for national and global competition. He said, “If we waste time, it will never return. Compete with the best, and be committed to your growth, your family, this institution, and the country.”
He concluded with a powerful reminder: “Above all, strive not only to be good veterinarians but also to be good human beings.”
