Bangladesh will attend the extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan who currently holds its rotating chairmanship.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Prime Minister’s Security Affairs Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique will join the summit, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry told UNB on Wednesday. Turkey announced its decision to organise an extraordinary summit of the OIC on Friday in Istanbul.
The US administration “unlawfully” opened its embassy in Jerusalem, said the OIC on Monday terming it a “clear violation” of international law and legitimacy and in clear contempt of international community’s position regarding Jerusalem. “The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly rejects and condemns in the strongest terms this illegal decision by the US administration,” said the OIC in a statement.
The OIC said it considers this action as an attack on the historical, legal, natural and national rights of the Palestinian people, which undermines the standing of the United Nations and rule of international law and thus represents an affront to international peace and security; as expressed at the Extraordinary OIC Islamic Summit held in Istanbul on December 13, 2017, and also by the international community at the UN General Assembly held on December21, 2017. Bangladesh has strongly condemned the use of deadly force by the Israeli authorities against unarmed Palestinians which left scores of Palestinian civilians dead and several thousand injured. While expressing deep condolences and sympathies for the Palestinians, Bangladesh called on the international community to put pressure on Israel to stop the atrocities immediately. Bangladesh also expressed its dismay as the United States’ shifted its Embassy to Jerusalem. Bangladesh stressed preserving the legal status of Jerusalem as an international city within the framework of relevant UN resolutions.
“Bangladesh reaffirms its position in favour of establishing the State of Palestine on the basis of two-state solution and on the pre- 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital,” said the Foreign Ministry here in a statement. Turkey strongly condemned the US for opening the embassy in Jerusalem and Israel for “committing a massacre” against the Palestinian protestors. Serving as the OIC term president, Turkey had initiated an extraordinary summit in Istanbul in December 2017 in a bid to protest the US decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Erdogan had phone conversations with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas late May 14 in order to discuss recent developments in the region. Along with diplomatic works, Turkey will also hold two big mass events in a bid to show solidarity with the people of Palestine, Turkish media reports.
