Internationally published Bangladeshi photojournalist Mahmud Hossain Opu has had his work on climate migration licensed and featured in the National Geographic Learning AP Human Geography textbook, a widely used educational resource across the United States. That photograph, first published in National Geographic, has now been featured in the National Geographic Learning AP Human Geography textbook, an educational resource for thousands of students in the United States and beyond, says a press release.

The textbook uses Mahmud’s work to help students understand one of the most urgent human stories of the 21st century: climate migration. Bangladesh, one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, is already witnessing the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people every year.

due to floods, salinity, and erosion.
“When I took this photograph, I wanted the world to see that climate change is not just about science or statistics—it’s about people, families, and survival,” said Mahmud Hossain Opu. “To know that my work is now part of classrooms, shaping how young people learn about our shared future, is deeply meaningful.”

Through this recognition, Mahmud’s photography continues to connect Bangladesh’s frontline struggles with a global conversation on climate change, education, and resilience.
