A second group of 71 Bangladesh Navy personnel from Bangladesh Force Marine Unit-11 departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport today, Monday, to join the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This contingent will replace Bangladesh Force Marine Unit-10 in upholding global peace efforts.
The first group of 99 navy members joined the mission on December 9. Under UN directives, the unit ensures safe passage for barges carrying essential fuel, food, medicines, and humanitarian aid along remote Sudanese waterways. It monitors and controls piracy, provides firefighting assistance to locals, secures civilian crew safety, conducts rescue operations on distressed vessels, and delivers logistics to remote military and civilian personnel.
Over three decades, Bangladesh Navy members have served with dedication in war-torn regions worldwide, including rescue, emergency medical aid, and diver support. Beyond South Sudan, the frigate BNS Sangram represents Bangladesh as the only South Asian vessel in the Maritime Task Force off Lebanon in the Mediterranean. The unit has successfully completed 71 logistic operations (Operation Life Line) along 1,311 km of the Nile River.
This proud participation enhances Bangladesh’s international image and reputation.
