Bangladesh will hold discussion with India today to assess the early warning system for flash floods, evaluate the effectiveness of the current system, and explore potential measures to mitigate such situations in the future, Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said today (22 August).
“A meeting will take place today between the chief adviser and the Indian ambassador to explore these issues in more detail,” the adviser said at a brief press briefing outside the state guesthouse Jamuna.
“They will discuss about what kind of early warnings we can expect for flash floods, whether we were adequately warned, and how countries can work to avoid such situations in the future and what specific measures can be taken,” she added.
She further said, “The ongoing flood situation in the country, particularly the unprecedented floods in Feni, has been a primary focus in today’s discussions among the advisory council.
“We discussed what we need to do, coordination and the suffering of the victims. Our members will visit every flood-affected district, and the official in charge of relief efforts has already started coordinating the distribution of aid.” Addressing coastal security, Rizwana mentioned that the Coast Guard has been instructed to prevent foreign fishermen from engaging in coastal fishing activities in Bangladesh’s waters.
