Bangladesh’s aviation security has received high international recognition after Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka and Osmani International Airport (OIA) in Sylhet earned exceptional ratings in a recent inspection by the United Kingdom’s Department for Transport (DfT).

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the DfT conducted its assessment in August 2025, awarding HSIA an overall score of 93 percent, including a perfect 100 percent in the Additional Measures Assessment (Cargo) category. OIA achieved an overall score of 94 percent, also earning 100 percent for cargo security measures. Inspectors expressed “deep satisfaction” with the preparedness and performance of both airports.

The DfT’s overseas airport inspections are intended to ensure that foreign airports handling flights to the UK maintain robust security standards for passengers and cargo. The UK-Bangladesh inspection program, operational since 2017, includes periodic follow-ups to verify ongoing compliance with additional security measures.

CAAB hailed the results as a milestone in Bangladesh’s aviation security progress, highlighting alignment with international best practices. “This achievement reflects the robustness of our aviation security system, which has direct implications for national and economic security,” the authority said in a statement.

The authority recalled that in 2016, inadequate cargo screening led to restrictions on direct shipments from Dhaka to the UK and European Union, forcing exporters to re-screen goods in third countries, incurring added costs and delays. Since then, CAAB and airport authorities have invested in upgraded infrastructure, modern equipment, and comprehensive training. Advanced security systems, including Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) and Explosive Detection Dogs (EDD), were introduced for cargo operations.

Officials said the outstanding scores demonstrate Bangladesh’s successful resolution of past challenges. “This recognition from the UK assures global partners that our aviation and cargo security meet international expectations,” CAAB noted, adding that it will strengthen confidence among foreign airlines, regulators, and investors while reducing the risk of trade barriers.

The authority credited the achievement to “visionary leadership, a steadfast regulatory framework, and the effective implementation of aviation security measures” by both airport administrations. It also reaffirmed its commitment to continuous improvement, pledging to enhance Bangladesh’s aviation security further and maintain its position as one of the region’s most trusted and compliant air transport hubs.

The results signal a new era for Bangladesh’s airports, underscoring their readiness to handle growing international traffic while ensuring the highest standards of safety and security.
