The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) has rescued 67 fishermen along with four fishing trawlers that had come under pirate attack near the estuary of the Sakina River in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Barguna.

The information was shared on Friday by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque.

He stated that on April 2, four fishing trawlers MV Tarek, Abdullah Tufan, MV Maa, and Junaid Islam carrying 67 fishermen set out from Patharghata in Barguna for deep-sea fishing.

On the night of April 9, around 11 PM, the trawlers were attacked by sea pirates near the Sakina estuary in the Bay of Bengal under the jurisdiction of Taltali Upazila in Barguna.

During the attack, two fishermen were shot, and before fleeing, the pirates disabled the engines of the trawlers.

On April 10, trawler owner Selim Chowdhury informed the Coast Guard of the incident. Acting on this information, a rescue team from Coast Guard Station Patharghata rushed to the location and successfully rescued all 67 fishermen along with the four trawlers, bringing them safely to the BCG Station in Patharghata.

Among the rescued fishermen, 27 were sent to Patharghata Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment, while the others were handed over to their families along with the boats.

Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque added that the Bangladesh Coast Guard maintains 24-hour patrols to ensure law and order.

As a result, law and order in coastal and riverside areas under Coast Guard jurisdiction has significantly improved. Such operations will continue in the future.
