The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced plans to significantly expand the contract pool for women cricketers. Following a board meeting in Mirpur on Saturday, BCB President Faruque Ahmed revealed the decision to reporters, highlighting the board’s commitment to the growth of women’s cricket in the country.
“We have central contracts for the women cricketers in the national pool. In addition to that, we will bring in 30 more cricketers under contract. It’ll be like the men’s cricketers; we have contracts for players who play in the national league. So, we will start that for the women as well,” Faruque announced at a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital’s of Mirpur on Saturday.
Currently, around 25 players are under contract in the national pool. The BCB plans to extend this by introducing first-class contracts for 30 additional players, replicating the structure used for the men’s cricket team.
Faruque also shared more good news for the Tigresses, confirming that they will now receive performance-based bonuses, similar to their male counterparts. This move aims to incentivize players and reward outstanding performances on the field.
“We have set a winning bonus for the women. This is new. As you all know, it’s a ranking-based system. If they beat the top three-ranked sides, there is a certain amount that is given as a bonus and if they beat 4, 5, and 6-ranked sides, the amount is different. It will be the same for the women. The amount will be different between the men and women but they (Tigresses) will get a bonus.”
The decision reflects the BCB’s dedication to developing women’s cricket and providing greater financial and professional opportunities for female cricketers in Bangladesh.
