Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will conduct a Rural Credit Survey across the country to undertake further development programmes and disburse agricultural credit timely and in an effective way.
With this in view, the BBS inaugurated a two-day training programme for the supervising officers at the Parisankhyan Bhaban here today. After the training programme, the countrywide Rural Credit Survey will begin for the second time on January 26 an end on February 9.
Under the programme, the BBS with its 423 field level data collectors will conduct the survey on 56,000 households at 2,240 census areas of 483 upazilas, throughout the country, said BBS director-general Golam Mostafa Kamal.
Earlier, the Rural Credit Survey report was first published in 1987.
The inaugural programme was also attended, among others, by Secretary of the Statistics and Information Management division Mohammad Nazibur Rahman as the chief guest. Director-General of the BBS Golam Mostafa Kamal was the special guest.
The training programme was chaired by Joint Secretary of the Statistics and Information Management Division M Alauddin Fakir.
Describing the rural credit survey as a time-befitting initiative, Mohammad Nazibur Rahman said the survey would help collect information on formal and non-formal rural credit programmes in the country.
Although a good number of banks, NGOs and financial organizations are usually providing credit to the rural people, they are also receiving credit from the rural money lenders, BBS DG said.
He said the survey would help undertake the development programme side by side with disbursement of agricultural credit in the rural areas in due time.
