The Bangladesh Bank has issued a public advisory following widespread social media posts claiming a sudden rise in counterfeit currency circulation across the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday by its Communications and Publications Department, the central bank termed such posts “misleading and baseless,” warning that they could create unnecessary panic and disrupt financial stability.

“Producing, carrying, or transacting fake currency is a serious criminal offence. Bangladesh Bank, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, is maintaining close surveillance and taking continuous action against those involved,” the statement said.

To help citizens detect and avoid counterfeit notes, the central bank issued four key safety measures:
• Check essential security features, including the watermark, embedded security thread, embossed print, colour-shifting ink, and micro-text when handling currency.
• Use formal banking channels for large-value transactions.
• Adopt digital payment systems wherever possible to reduce cash handling.
• Report any suspected counterfeit notes to nearby police stations or through the national emergency helpline 999.

The Bangladesh Bank also urged citizens to visit its official website for detailed information on the security features of genuine banknotes.

Officials reiterated that the central bank’s detection units and forensic teams are working closely with intelligence and law enforcement agencies to ensure counterfeit currency is swiftly identified and removed from circulation.
