Today is the second death anniversary of Barrister Mainul Hosein, former Adviser to a caretaker government and founder and Publisher of the daily The New Nation.
The distinguished lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, columnist, and author, passed away on December9, 2023.
He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. He battled cancer for a year.
A Doa, Milad Mahfil and Quran Khani will be held at 11: 30 at Azimpur graveyard in the capital, another Doa and Milad Mahfil will be organised at the Ittefaq Bhaban, 1, R.K. Mission Road, Motijheel following the Johr prayer on Tuesday (December9) to commemorate the second death anniversary of the distinguished state and social thinker.
These events are being organised to pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul, his family sources said.
Besides, different social organisations will organise prayer and discussion programmes on Barrister Mainul Hosein’s life and work.
Bangladesh Association of Journalists for Human Rights will organise a prayer and discussion event on the memory of Barrister Mainul Hosein at Press Council Hall at Topkhana Road, Dhaka at 11:00 am on Wednesday.
Barrister Mainul Hosein was a prominent Bangladeshi lawyer, politician, state and social thinker, author, and a lifelong fighter for law and justic, democracy and humanity.
He was the eldest son of renowned journalist Tofazzal Hossain (Manik Mia).
Barrister Mainul Hosein also served as the former chairman of the editorial board of The Daily Ittefaq.
He was born in January, 1940 in Pirojpur and graduated at Dhaka University in 1961. Then he pursued legal studies in London.
Returning to Bangladesh in 1965, he began his law career at the Dhaka Bar Council. Following his father’s demise in 1969, he assumed the role of Editor The Daily Ittefaq, later become the Chairman of its editorial board.
Mainul Hosein was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) in 1973, representing his constituency in Bhandaria, Pirojpur district, as a member of the Awami League.
In May 1975, he, along with General MAG Osmani, resigned from the Parliament in protest of Sheikh Mujib’s abolition of democracy in the country and establishing a one-party system of government known as BAKSAL through the Fourth Amendment to the constitution.
He also served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association in 2000 to 2001.
During January 2007 to January 2008, he served as the law, information, and land Adviser to the caretaker government of Bangladesh.
Barrister Mainul Hosein’s legacy continues to shine as a guiding light for democracy, press freedom, and an independent judiciary in Bangladesh.
