Barishal hit by heavy rain, suffers from waterlogging

Due to land depression, heavy rains have flooded the low lying areas of Barishal city caused waterlogging in different spots.
Classes suspended in different educational institutions due to adverse weather condition.
Unplanned drainage and sewerage systems of the city caused these sufferings, opined Ranjit Dutta, district coordination of CAB.
Muhammad Bashir, senior observer of Meteorological Office, Barishal said 280 ml of rain recorded in last 3 days till 3:00 PM Sunday September 15, 2024.
Among those amount 18 ml of rain has recorded from Sunday morning to 12 noon, Muhammad Bashir said.
However, the maximum rainfall till 9 am in the last 24 hourson Sundayrecorded as 178.8 mm in Barishal, 150 mm in Bhola, 139 mm in Jhalokathi, 157.2 mm in Pirojpur, 129 mm in Barguna and 178 mm in Patuakhali, Barishal divisional weather office sources informed.
Meanwhile, different areas of Barishal city including river banks at Palashpur, Amanatganj , Bandh Road, Port Road and Rupatali areas, Battala Road, College Row, College Avenue, Gorasthan Road, Nabogram, C and B Road areas of the city have been submerged in 2 to 4 feet of water due to heavy rain.
Movement of passengers, commuters, and people in the city is reduced during the raining.
Due to heavy rain, the working people especially day labours, could not go to work.
Road transports including battery operated three-wheelers often went out of order due water poured inside engines on submerged roads.
Most of the educational institutions in the city suspended classes due to inundation.
Assistant Directorof divisional Primary Education Barishal Shah Md. Rakibul Hasan said, there are about 6500 primary schools in the department. No instructions were given to close. Local management may decide to suspend educational activities for time being due to downpour .
Jahangir Hossain said, this situation is normal during the season. In case of storm, floods and natural calamities then the closure decision will be announced.
Besides, Bhola, Patuakhali, Jhalkathi, Pirojpur and Barguna education offices have informed that activities have been continued in all secondary schools.
Barishal District Primary Education Officer Sheikh Md. Aktaruzzaman said that in the low lying areas of Bakerganj, Hijla and Mehendiganj upazilas of the district, were flooded due to heavy rains.
Barishal river port has been asked to show marine warning signal number 1 and Payra sea port has been asked to show signal number 3, said Abdul Quddus, senior observer of Barishal Meteorological Office.
He said, the effect of low pressure is likely to pass by Monday. The situation is expected to return to normal from Tuesday.
Barishal River Port Officer Abdur Razzak saidthe passenger carrying water transport operation on all routes including the inner , outer and long distant routes resumed on Sunday, although the number of passengers was very low.
