BARI inaugurates a workshop

The Central Research Review & Planning Workshop 2025 of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Kazi Badrudduza Auditorium of the institute.

This workshop has been organised to evaluate all the research programmes undertaken in the last year (2024-2025) and to formulate the research programme for the next year (2025-2026) in light of those experiences. The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) is currently conducting research activities on 212 crops. A total of 1,349 technologies, including 677 high-yielding, disease-resistant and adverse environment-tolerant varieties and 672 other production technologies, have been developed by BARI.

As a result of these technological innovations, the production of oilseeds, pulses, potatoes, wheat, vegetables, spices and fruits has increased significantly in the country. The main objective of this workshop is to verify the suitability of these technologies and to plan future innovation programmes according to the current needs of the country. The technical sessions of the workshop will be held regularly from 11-13 November 2025.

Honourable Agriculture Adviser & Home Affairs Adviser to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, was the chief guest, while Director General of BARI, Dr Md Abdullah Yousuf Akhond, presided over the inaugural ceremony. Honourable Agriculture Secretary to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian, attended as a special guest.

In his speech, the chief guest said, “We will design our research programme based on the interests of our farmers. The country and its people will benefit from this.”

At the inauguration ceremony, Director General of BARI, Dr Md Abdullah Yousuf Akhond, presented a keynote paper on BARI’s research activities and achievements. Also present on the occasion were Director (Research) Dr Munshi Rashid Ahmad, Director (Support & Services) Dr Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, Director (Training and Communication) Dr Md Ataur Rahman, Director (Horticulture Research Centre) Dr Faruque Ahmed, Director (Pulse Research Centre) Dr Md Mazharul Anwar, Director Md Monjurul Kadir, Director Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman, and Director Dr Md Altaf Hossain.

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Extension, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, senior officers of various institutions, agricultural experts, scientists, and representatives from government, non-government, and international organisations, along with BARI scientists and officers, took part in the inaugural session.
