The Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur resumed partial electricity production after a three-day shutdown.

Chief Engineer Abu Bakr Siddique reported that Unit 1, with a capacity of 125 MW, was brought back online at 5:00 pm on Thursday following an overhaul, with power generation commencing after 8:00 pm. Currently, around 60 to 65 MW of electricity is being supplied to the national grid.

Siddique expressed hope that the plant’s third unit, which was shut down on Monday due to a mechanical fault, will be restarted within a few days once replacement parts are provided by the Chinese contractor, Harbin International.

Meanwhile, Unit 2, also with a 125 MW capacity, has been completely non-functional since the start of the year. When the third unit was taken offline, power production at the entire plant was halted.

The Barapukuria plant, the country’s first coal-based power station, generates electricity by burning coal extracted from the nearby Barapukuria coal mine using steam-powered turbines.
