Banyan trees are a blessing of nature, sometimes providing shade, sometimes creating intense illusion.
However, when that banyan tree becomes a death trap, panic spreads in the minds of people.
One such banyan tree is now as dangerous as the demon of Yama to the people of Bajitpur intersection in Tangail Sadar Upazila.
A huge old banyan tree located next to the Tangail-Deldua regional highway has fallen on a busy market. Locals fear that it could collapse at any time, causing major loss of life.
Heavy traffic has already been stopped. Several shops in the market have been damaged.
Halim Mia, a shopkeeper in the market, said, “My shop has been completely destroyed because the banyan tree fell.”
Another businessman Minhaj Mia said, “My shop is also damaged. The tree can fall at any time. That’s why I can’t open my shop for fear.”
Tea seller Nuru Mia said, “I used to run my family sitting in the shade of this tree. Now my shop is sitting closed because it is leaning.”
