Banks face bulky cash withdrawals on the last working day

Huge numbers of clients have withdrawn cash from banks on Thursday, as it was the last working day before starting the holidays of Eid-ul-Azha.

As per the bank officials statements, the transactions were 30. percent high on Thursday from business on regular working days.

The holy Eid-ul-Azha, the biggest religious festival for Muslims, will be celebrated on Monday.

Bank officials said there was a gigantic rush of customers in banks mainly to withdraw money.

“A large number of customers were coming and were in long queues in our branch. All the officials at the counters had passed. very busy time today, ‘”said a senior officer from Agrani Bank, Motijheel branch.

Such a view was seen at different banks with officials struggling to provide services under the pressure of cash withdrawal, the officials said.

A similar crowd of clients was seen at banks in Motijheel Dilkusha, Paltan, Mogbazar, Farmgate, and Gulshan, Uttara, Mohakhali and almost every area of the capital.

Long lines of clients were seen in front of the cash counters of the bank branches since this morning. Many of the customers were found receiving new taka.

Besides, lines were also seen for depositing various invoices, deposits and other service bills. Bank officials said that there has been a rush on the last working day before Eid always.

“The Eid holiday makers used to go to village homes to celebrate the holy Eid. They have to buy sacrificial cattle, so they need extra money, which they used to withdraw from banks, “, he said. Besides, cash is being collected to pay the salaries and allowances for the workers of factories and industries establishments, he said.

As per the statement of senior officials of Bangladesh Bank, Tk 1.30 lakh crore to Tk 1.50 lakh crore are usually transacted on the last working day before Eid.
