The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) on Monday asked banks in the country to freeze activity on any accounts belonging to Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Putul, children of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and her nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, son of Sheikh Rehana, reportsUNB.
The BFIU, the country’s premier agency for fighting white collar crime, also instructed banks to freeze any accounts belonging to Nasrul Hamid, former state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, as well as any institutional accounts associated with the Centre for Research and Information, which came to be regarded as the Awami League’s think tank, and the ‘Young Bangla’ project based out of CRI.
Hamid was also one of the principal benefactors of CRI, where Radwan Mujib played a leading executive role, although his official position remained trustee.
Joy and Putul serve as the chairperson and vice-chairperson, respectively, of CRI.
The BFIU instructed banks to block the accounts for 30 days in the first phase.
