BD’s economy sees miracle turnaround in 6 months: Shafiqul
NN Online:
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Wednesday called Bangladesh’s economic recovery over the past six months a “miracle,” highlighting the nation’s rapid turnaround.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the “DJFB Talk,” organised by the Development Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (DJFB) at the NEC conference room in the city on Wednesday.
“Before the interim government took charge, the country’s economy had reached a point where it could have collapsed at any moment. Restoring discipline in the energy sector needed as there has been state-sponsored looting in this sector.” he said.
The press secretary emphasised that the government is working toward a long-term solution for the power sector, engaging in discussions with major power companies to enhance energy production. Plans include drilling a substantial number of wells to extract gas, ensuring a stable supply.
He emphasised the need to improve the efficiency of Chittagong Port, stating that investment growth depends on its enhancement. For increased re-export opportunities, further upgrades are necessary. Discussions are already underway with major global companies to achieve this goal. The government aims to develop all ports in Chittagong to attract direct foreign investment and strengthen Bangladesh’s trade capacity.
Shafiqul said, “If the energy system is not efficient, no one will invest. The power system was looted in an organised manner. The country needs investment, but it was not facilitated. The revenue system was not properly managed.
“The previous government spent money recklessly despite having no funds. Five hundred sixty model mosques were built at excessive costs, which could have been done for much less. Railway lines were laid in such a way that trains do not even run throughout the day. This is nothing but a waste of public money.”
